This coming Sunday will see this little blog turn 1 year old. Happy Birthday, Roxie Ginger – it’s been a good run so far. Let’s see a bit more of one another from here on out, what do you say? You’re cool with that? Excellent.
The past 6 weeks have been a whirlwind of big changes, which is becoming a theme of this year methinks. I’m a wood ox in the Chinese zodiac and wasn’t expecting all of this. They say you’ve got to be open to change sometimes and there is no time like the present. Therefore, I’m just rolling with it.
Hrmmm, changes – summer is in full force; I’ve decided to switch jobs, started to see a nutritionist, as well as began practicing yoga. All of these have meant that recipe creation has taken a back burner for a wee bit. I’m happy to say I am taking the front seat once again of my mental and physical wellbeing and am ready to move forward.
Entertaining during the summer months is always a top priority of mine, which means some drinks will be had. Getting friends around a table for board games outside or just some conversation and good music is my idea of paradise. My love of entertaining, coupled with the fact that New York is a drinking town can be at odds with a healthier lifestyle, and it can be especially challenging on nights when willpower is low. While I know that no boozy recipe could be called super diet friendly, this one eliminates a lot by not using pre-made lemonade.
Cheers to the birthday, girl. Cheers to summer. Cheers to big steps forward.
Happy New Year! I gladly welcome you, 2013. I’ve been trying to come up with my resolutions, and I’m really drawing a blank. I have an intense love of resolutions, but now that I’m writing about these, ideas are coming in droves. 3 seems like a good solid number, so let’s cull the masses of inspiration and narrow it down. What do you say?
- After the holiday glut of decadent eating and drinking, I figure most of us (except the very disciplined of us, of course) want to cleanse the palate and generally try to live a little healthier. I could definitely go that route after my week-long holiday back home. Therefore, I resolve to run 4 races this year. One every 3 months, so I always have one to be working toward.
- In the vein of cleansing my palate, preparing my lunch during the weekdays to avoid spending the outrageous amounts on midtown lunches. Saving myself 1 day for a bagel, each week.
- Since starting Roxie Ginger back in July, I’ve come to enjoy writing and working on improving it. My goal is to write something – maybe not an entire post, and maybe not even something that I will share with anybody else – but write something every day.
Are there any that I might be missing? What are some of yours?
Now that that is settled, let me come back to the task at hand, introducing you (or maybe not!?) to a new drink we discovered on New Year’s Eve. A few years ago a friend of mine brought back a bottle of Becherovka from a trip to Prague. An herbal, spiced liqueur, it wasn’t love at first taste, but it was intriguing enough to keep me coming back.
It is the hottest week of the year in Barcelona right now. You know those scenes from movies where there is a heat wave and people are sprawled out and sultry in front of a dinky fan? (If you’ve seen Do the Right Thing, you’ll know what I’m talking about.) Well, that somewhat sums up what we’re dealing with this week in our AC-less apartment.
Last night as I was daring myself to turn on the stove to cook some dinner, I thought to myself “what is the most refreshing thing I could make right now?” and the answer was brought to me in a resounding chorus – non-other than “WATERMELON LEMONADE!” For just a second while I was sipping this down, I could have sworn a cool breeze had flown through the apartment.
